September 23rd is right around the corner and you know what that means: New Comic Book Day! Out of all the books releasing this week from Marvel, DC, and all those independent publishers, here are my Top 5 picks for this week.
First up, out of DC, is my current favorite fantasy book, The Last God issue 8. Looking at the description for this book. It reads, “Eyvindr and Valko face off against a horrific monster of incredible proportions and unyielding hunger. With Cyanthe and the rest of the fellowship separated from the two young heroes, survival will come at a great cost -- one that not all of them will survive”. Now, if you have yet to read The Last God, I recommend picking up a trade if you are unable to get the individual issues. This is fantasy but its geared towards an older audience, from the exposed breasts of the Dwarrows, to the brutal barbarous ways people are killed. Don't even get me started on the incredible interior art from the panels to the splash pages. Yeah, this is a must-buy for me.
Coming in next, I'm not sure if I'm more excited about the story or this Marvel Zombies variant for Doctor Doom issue 7. The A cover for this is cool, I mean it's Doctor Doom on the cover, that should be enough right? Well, The B cover looks so freaking badass with Doctor Doom Zombified done by Miguel Mercado. It makes me happy for tossing both the A and B cover on my pull-list. Now, touching on the story, we left off with Doom stabbing Kang in the neck before he blinked away. Then he called Reed up and told him how to fix the black hole on the moon. Looking at what is said about issue 8 it seems like Doom is returning to Latveria to reclaim his throne, like the badass he is.
In this third book, I have yet to hear anyone talking about it, Brooklyn Gladiator #1. If you follow my YouTube channel then you might have heard me mention the name Lobo once or twice and that's because of this artist Simon Bisley. His art style is so chaotic and unique that I love it. Oh, and did I forget to mention that Dan Fogler is writing the book? Yes, the same Dan Fogler from Balls of Fury, The Walking Dead, Fantastic Beast, and many more movies and tv shows (Yes, I have seen these movies/shows). (Hey, John's Comics with kids! He's also in Hannibal!) Here is the description of Brooklyn Gladiator: “It's 2033, New Yorkers survive on scraps in a despoiled America. John Miller is an action hero for the ages, a rough and ready badass who could drink Han Solo, Jack Burton, and John McClane under the table. Brooklyn Gladiator is a tribute to the comics, films, and experiences that have inspired author, Dan Fogler.”.
Next up is another new number one coming out of Boom Studios: An Unkindness of Ravens #1. There are a few covers, like the beautiful Jenny Frison variant, but at 20 bucks I think I'll pass and stick with that cover price A cover. This to me can be a hit or a miss because, well, it's about witches and I've read my fair share of garbage witch stories. But when there's a good one, oh man is it good. This is pretty much about the descendants of witches who didn't die during the Salem Witch Trials. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope it's good.
Now my final pick for this week is going to a new Vault Comics title, Autumnal #1. If you saw my last pick I'm kinda rolling the dice with the witch book and here I am rolling the dice again with this one. To put it simply, Vault has great books and as we are approaching October, this seems like an October-esque type of book. Purely basing my assumptions off of the cover I will be buying it. Plus it seems to be selling out quickly.
